Cole Harbour District High School Weekly Update

Friday, October 17, 2025

Good Evening Cole Harbour District High School Families,

This week was filled with exciting achievements and upcoming opportunities for our school community. One of the highlights was the outstanding participation of our Indigenous Leadership Group at the Mawio'mi held at Dalhousie University on Wednesday. Our students from Cole Harbour and Sir Robert Borden proudly took the honored second drum position, sharing their voices and culture through drumming, singing, and dancing. Their representation brought pride to our school and community, and we are so proud of their courage and talent.  Great Job Cavs!

In athletics, our women’s volleyball team had an impressive performance Thursday night, defeating Woodlawn in a hard-fought match that went to five sets. They now head to Prince Edward Island to compete in the Wolverine Classic Invitational at West Isle Composite High School. As defending champions, our CAVS are looking to retain their title, and we send them our best wishes for continued success over the weekend.

Our boys’ soccer team also faces an important challenge today, as they compete in a regional semi-final match. A win will secure them a place in the provincial championship tournament, and we are excited to cheer them on as they strive for victory. Best of luck to the entire team—your hard work and determination are truly appreciated.

Looking ahead, a creative opportunity is on the horizon for students interested in music production. The Beatmaking Club is set to launch in November, meeting on Wednesday afternoons. This club will allow aspiring sound editors, DJs, and producers to collaborate and learn directly from industry professionals. More details will be shared with students next week.

Overall, it has been an inspiring and eventful week filled with cultural pride, athletic achievement, and creative opportunities. Whether through the arts, sports, or new clubs, our students continue to demonstrate dedication and passion in all they do. We look forward to seeing what the rest of the fall brings for our school community.

Wishing everyone a joyful and safe weekend.

Cole Harbour District High School Weekly Update

Friday, October 10, 2025

Good Evening Cole Harbour District High School Families,

This was another busy week at CHDHS with lots of activities happening. From professional training sessions to extracurricular clubs and sports, both staff and students have been hard at work raising the academic standards and school spirit of our community. It’s always exciting to see our school buzzing with energy, and this week was no exception. The continued involvement in both classroom and non-classroom experiences highlights the well-rounded culture we are building together.

A number of after-school clubs and sports are currently in full swing, providing students with opportunities to explore their interests and build friendships outside of regular class time. These activities are essential in helping students feel more connected to the school and give them a sense of belonging and pride. Whether it’s the competitive edge of a sports team or the creativity sparked in a club, there’s something for everyone at CHDHS right now.

We’d like to extend a big thank you to all the dedicated volunteers who are making these activities possible. A special shout-out goes to Wayne Barnaby, David MacDonald, Jason Walker, and Landon Simon for baseball; Jaime Bent and Tammy Durdle-Malcom for volleyball; Evan Jobb for cross country; Trever Parent for girls’ soccer; Cohen Reddick for boys’ soccer; Ian Kaye for judo; Michael Jean and his team for badminton club; Kayla Lambert-MacDonald for supporting Indigenous Student Leadership; and David Zinck for leading improv and board games. Your time and commitment are helping to shape a vibrant school culture, and your contributions do not go unnoticed. Your support is deeply appreciated by both students and staff.

We also want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate Mr. Michael Jean, who was recently named one of the top teachers in Canada. He received a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in STEM, earning a Certificate of Achievement. This national recognition is a testament to the outstanding work Mr. Michael Jean is doing in our classrooms and beyond. Congratulations, Michael — we are proud to have you as part of our CHDHS family!

Finally, congratulations are in order for our Cavs Boys Soccer team, who wrapped up their regular season undefeated and captured their first banner in many years. This achievement marks a major turnaround for the program, which just two seasons ago did not register a single win. The team’s hard work, dedication, and resilience are truly inspiring. Great job, Cavs — the entire school is proud of you!

Once again, thank you for letting us be part of your student’s education journey.  Have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving Weekend.

Friday, October 3, 2025

Good Evening Cole Harbour District High School Families,

It’s been a busy week at CHDHS despite the short schedule. On Thursday night, our Cav Girls volleyball team triumphed over École Du Sommet in an exciting match, winning 2 sets to 1. Later that evening, we hosted a well-attended meeting for the upcoming Italy 2027 Europe Trip, sparking plenty of excitement among those planning to join the adventure. Wednesday was another eventful day, with our Girls soccer team playing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against École Du Sommet. In addition, our Indigenous Student Leadership group organized a moving Treaty Day Assembly for the school, providing an important learning opportunity for everyone.

As we wrap up the week, we’re looking forward to tonight's Games Night, where students and their friends will gather for some fun and friendly competition. It's been a packed three days, showcasing the energy and spirit of our school community. Looking ahead, on Tuesday, October 7, we’ll hold our first SAC meeting of the year at 6:30 pm in the conference room. It's a great opportunity for parents or guardians to get involved in shaping the direction of our school.

If you're interested in joining the SAC this year, feel free to reach out to me via email at rreddick@hrce.ca.  We welcome anyone passionate about contributing to the school’s success and community spirit!

Once again, thanks for letting us be part of your student’s educational experience.  Have an enjoyable and safe weekend.

Cole Harbour District High School Weekly Update

Friday, September 26, 2025

Good Evening Cole Harbour District High School Families,

Please note that Monday, September 29th is a PD day and Tuesday, September 30th is National Truth and Reconciliation day, which means there is no school for students on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Grade 10 students who attended Sir Robert Borden Junior High are asked to return any athletic jerseys to the Cole harbour High main office. Missing sports jerseys are affecting their fall sports programs and they need our help.

We are very proud of our Indigenous student leadership group led by Kayla Lambert-MacDonald who toured local feeder schools with a presentation about Truth and Reconciliation on Friday, September 26th.  We are looking forward to our own full school assembly on Wednesday, October 1st where those students will share their wisdom and cultural understanding with all Cavaliers so we can celebrate Treaty Day and honor the Truth and Reconciliation process.

Our first Games night is next Friday October 3rd 6:30-9 p.m. where students and community members grades 9-12 are welcome to come to Cole Harbour District High School to participate in a Super Smash Bros Tournament on the Nintendo switch, play Dungeons and Dragons and other table top games as well as paint fantasy miniatures.  There are open tables for other games as well.  The cost is $5 to support our Improv Team this year.

Our first Pep rally was a smash hit this year on Wednesday, September 24th in the afternoon featuring a students vs teachers volleyball game where the women's volleyball team crushed the teachers in the first set, only to fall behind in the second set as time expired and both sides had to settle for a draw.  All classes attended and it was an over the top spectacle with in game interviews, some epic rallies, and good natured fun had by all. A big thanks to our Student Council for running such an amazing event.

All Grade 10 students should have received their free spirit wear from the office today. Now all students have Cavs Equity and Respect shirts they can proudly wear on spirit days and school events.

On Thursday Oct 2nd, the post-secondary options AARAO fair will happen in the morning in our gym and cafeteria where students can explore and meet with a wide variety of institutions to think about and plan for their post-secondary lives.

Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend.
